The Texas (Flint) Chert and Steel Kit by Vern's Flint and Steel is a premium fire starter kit designed for outdoor enthusiasts. This kit includes a built-in flint sharpener for convenience and extra flint to ensure long-lasting use. Made in the United States, its tan and brown-colored flint is a reliable and durable material for starting fires in any outdoor setting. Ideal for camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities, this kit is a must-have for anyone looking to stay prepared in the wilderness.

Included in this kit (1 set):

  • 1 C-shaped hardened sparking steel striker, 3-1/2 inches in length. Considered a four-finger striker. Use the area of the steel where the ends almost meet to sharpen the flint. Please see video.

  • 5 large pieces of pure black charred cloth made from thick 9-ounce denim. Large enough to cut in half. This char was made to not be brittle and should catch a spark anywhere on its surface.

  • Several pieces of birch bark to extend a small flame as it burns even when damp due to its natural oils. This bark is great!

  • 1 larger or 2 smaller hard Texas chert (flint) rocks (depending on stock) inside the tin, plus an extra flint stored in the bag.

  • One Ranger band made from a bicycle tire that helps keep the tin closed. It can also be used to extend a small flame.

  • Three larger pieces of 5/16" Manila rope tinder that is not oily smelling, and 3 to 5 jute rope pieces (1/4" diameter, 4-ply) to convert into several bird’s-nest-style tinders. I teach students to use 2 nests for a very high success rate: a smaller fine fiber jute nest in the middle and a larger fiber manila rope nest using approx. 10 inches of 5/16" diameter manila. Manila’s thicker fibers burn longer, giving you more time to place a burning nest into a firelay. Once the char has a spark, place it in the center and fold the nest like a taco without smothering it—airflow is essential for ignition. The rope fibers of the nest should not be squeezed tightly together or be too loose.

  • The tin is tied with a decorative bow of 3-ply jute twine.

  • 1 thick 4-ply reusable plastic zip-lock bag.

  • 1 hinged metal tin (3.75 inches x 2.5 inches).

  • Directions for use and instructions on how to make char cloth.

This kit is made in the USA.
