Easily create an ember with this bow drill. You will find this bow drill works very nicely and the directions in the video will guide one to complete the task of making an ember for your nesting material.
Make your nest from the jute rope provided by separating a length of approximately 10”inches. The nest material should be conformed like that of angel hair fibers. I instruct students to roll the fibers into a meatball shape and form into a small round pizza shape and bend it into as birds nest shape.
When ready fold the nest like a taco with the smoking ember in its center. If the nest is too loose one might see sparks eventually get blown thru the nest. Try to avoid this by making the nest tighter but not too tight since fire needs air. This is where a piece of bark, or maybe several leaves will help stop sparks from being blown thru the nest. A hand size piece of birch bark from a fallen tree works really well if available.
