With this item, its intended use is for one to make into a soft birds-like nest.
This jute is rated as a 4 ply 72# strength, is approximately ¼” in diameter, is cut to 125’ feet in length, and is absolutely my favorite material for fire starting and hopefully it will be yours also. I must admit I like to add this in with a manila rope nest as it will catch a spark quickly and burn longer with the thicker fibers of the manila rope. What I’m actually doing is placing a jute nest inside a larger manila nest, but either will work as a separate nest bundle.
First, I cut jute pieces at 7 or 8 inches in length and then separate the fibers using the edge of the steel striker, a straight edge of the flint rock, or knife. Of course, pulling apart the fibers with your hands works too. I like to fluff up the angel hair fibers on a flat surface and then roll into a ball and form it into a soft bird’s nest shape.
Because of its softness and good tying qualities, jute is often used where strength is a factor. It is excellent for gardening, household tying, and for me making into excellent
birds like nest for fire starting.
So, I offer this 100% natural jute that is very convenient to use because of its softness, diameter size and 4 ply qualities that is easy to separate. After 20 years of searching I found this to be the best for my students and customers alike as I am always looking for a way to offer a better Vern’s Flint and Steel product.
