My Story
Igniting Passion Through Firecraft
I first discovered fire starting as a Boy Scout leader for my two sons. Teaching their Webelos Patrol with ferro rods, I saw the excitement when they mastered the skill and even won first place at the Klondike Derby. That moment hooked me on traditional fire starting.
Since then, I’ve spent nearly 15 years crafting flint and steel kits, teaching scouts and adults alike. Each spark brings joy, confidence, and tradition — now available through Vern’s Flint & Steel Kits.

How It Works
Choose your kit
Open the sturdy hinged tin to reveal sharpened flint, char cloth squares, and natural jute nesting material for fire starting.

Prepare The Nest
Loosen and fluff jute fibers into a soft bird’s nest shape, securely tuck the char cloth inside for ignition success.

Strike And Ignite
Strike hardened steel against sharp flint, capture sparks on char cloth, gently blow, then ignite tinder nest.

Fire Nest
Building and Igniting the Perfect Nest
Our complete kits include natural manila rope, untreated and safe, perfect for shaping into a bird-like nest with char cloth inside. Add air gradually until it bursts into flame.
Quickly place the burning nest into your fire lay. The thicker rope burns longer, giving extra time. Jute coils are also available in 125-foot lengths for $8.
